Do I Hear Money? How to Market an Estate Auction

Estate auctions are never fun, and they aren’t the type of thing you throw a party to prepare for.  Unfortunately, just tuning out and “floating” through an estate auction is a mistake.  They are much more than an exaggerated garage sale.  There are some ways to truly make the most out of your auction, and bring home the most profit.  Here are some tips to help you get ready for the big day:

Inventory everything.

This not only helps you account for everything once the auction is over, it helps you make decisions on pricing and likelihood of sale so you can project your profit.  As you track the objects, rate them on their condition so you know what to expect versus other items in the house.

Fix It Up.

If you have an opportunity to make it work better or look better, do it.  Anything helps when you are trying to recoup value.

Advertise Online

Your auctioneer might have an online gallery available for you, but social media is also a great place to let people know that you are going to be moving your stuff.

Use signs so the neighborhood knows you’re have an auction.

Your biggest supporter might live right down the street.  Make sure everyone knows when your auction is by advertising in your neighborhood.

If you are keeping it, move it.

If there is any way to do it, move all of the possessions you don’t want to sell into one or two rooms.  If they aren’t accessible you’re less likely to have people pestering you about their availability.
