What to Do One Month Before You Move

Consider this scenario: You are moving in one month, looking around your home and wondering, “What should I be doing right now for my move?” While you might be wondering if it is too early to begin packing, there are many things you can be doing one month out from your move—in addition to packing—to help prepare for a smooth moving process.

OreillyTeam-CircleMasterFile2-Nov15Plan for utility connection/disconnection. This is an aspect of the moving process that sometimes gets forgotten until the final days before your move. Rather than waiting until the last minute, call your utility companies and arrange for utilities to be disconnected in your current home and connected in your new home. This will ensure a smooth transition for you and your family as well as ensure you have essential utilities, such as power and heat, in place when you arrive.

Arrange necessary childcare during your move. If you have young children, what will they be doing on move day? You might arrange a friend or family number to watch your children at their home, or you could ask them to come to your new home. If that is the case, make sure you plan for a certain area in your new home where your children can play or nap comfortably, as needed.

Create a diagram for furniture placement. Think through where large furniture items will go in your new home. Movers will not typically rearrange furniture for you, so be sure to create a diagram that helps them direct each piece to the right place in the right room. This will require some advance planning and thinking through your room arrangements.

Begin your packing with seasonal items. You are likely anxious to begin packing, but unsure where to start. Think about seasonal items that you will not be using again until you are in your new home. For example, if you are moving during the fall or winter, you can begin to pack beach towels, spring or summer clothing, or off-season sporting gear.
